The Alpha Illinois Leadership Foundation’s (AILF) mission is to develop youth and families to become community advocates through awareness, education, and advocacy. To advance our mission, the Alpha Illinois Leadership Foundation was founded to develop, advocate and support our Community Empowerment and Advocacy Institute. The Community Empowerment and Advocacy Institute’s target population is African American and Latinx residents living in Illinois communities with high-risk factors such as poverty, single-parent households, community unemployment, and high school dropout.
AILF serves this at-risk population by engaging community residents with strategies to engage on multiple levels to help them overcome these barriers to success. Unlike many programs that view residents as clients or cases, we empower residents as individuals with meaningful contributions toward problems plaguing their community. In collaboration with many of the chapters and partners of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., for more than four years, Alpha Illinois Leadership Foundation has provided services, addressing youth and other community violence, lack of economic development and financial empowerment, disparities in mental and physical health, and the pressures found in low-to-moderate income communities to drop out of school and participate in street activities.
The AILF Community Empowerment and Advocacy Institute’s various initiatives provide an attractive, positive alternative to the streets. We are successfully establishing an achievement-oriented, service-minded, and community-focused counterculture. In contrast to the entrenched street culture and other community disparities that are both unimaginative and unproductive, Alpha Illinois Leadership Institute prepares and empowers youth and families to make positive contributions to society by providing necessary academic and social support, promoting leadership, helping youth and families to view themselves as positive change agents, and by providing a network of positive relationships on which they can build.
To effectively make an impact, we have housed our programs within a community-based site in Chicago’s southside. Still, our focus is on providing services to African American and Latinx communities throughout the State of Illinois. AILF has forged strong partnerships with the local business community, media, school districts, and other youth and family-serving organizations. AILF continues to advance its mission and expand the scope of its programmatic services, which include the following: Go-To-High-School-Go-To-College, Empowering YOU, Family Support Services, Community Economic Development, and the Community Empowerment and Advocacy Institute. Since its inception, the AILF has served countless youth and families in its programs.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, our volunteers, and myself We remain grateful to the countless partners and supporters like you who’ve never left the side of our youth, families and communities. Thank you for joining us as we adapted to the needs of our communities.
